Lyndsay Cuming has provided a useful summary of osteomyelitis, covering pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment.

In a large study of cases of Candida osteomyelitis (OM), it was found that the commonest infected site in paediatric patients was the femoral bone. Non-albicans Candida caused ~35% of cases and in 12% of cases there was concomitant bacterial infection. Therefore, it is important to undertake a biopsy and culture if at all possible. Significantly, 21% of the cases had septic arthritis alongside the OM. In 42% of the cases, both surgery and anti-fungal treatment was needed. Importantly, an extended course of 6-12 months of anti-fungals was needed to ensure the infection did not relapse. In only 32% of cases was there a complete response to treatment.
